Profile: Andrew Lloyd Webber
Andrew Lloyd Webber, born on the 22nd of March, 1948, began composing at six years of age, and published his first piece when he was just nine years old. He has been called ‘the most commercially successful composer in history’, and some of his musicals have had runs of over a decade in Broadway and the West End. His repertoire includes two film scores, 13 musicals, a set of variations, a Latin Requiem Mass and a song cycle.
Some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most popular musicals include such greats as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Likes of Us, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Whistle Down the Wind and Starlight Express, to name just a few. He also composed the Gumshoe and The Odessa File film scores, and, in 2004, he produced a cinematic version of The Phantom of the Opera, which Joel Schumacher directed, followed by, in 2006, a spectacular Las Vegas version of the musical. In March 2010, his new show, Love Never Dies, a continuation of the saga of Christine and The Phantom, opened at Adelphi Theatre in London.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has earned an Oscar, a Golden Globe, three Grammy Awards, seven Tony Awards, two International Emmys, and seven Olivier Awards, amongst others. Currently, he owns seven theatres in London, including the London Palladium and the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. In 1992, he received a knighthood, and in 1997 was created an honorary peer for life, becoming Baron Lloyd Webber.
