A story about a story, Wicked first took to the stage on Broadway in 2003 and crossed the Atlantic to charm London theatre-goers in sold out performances since 2006. This entrancing production is based on a novel written way back when by Gregory Maguire to parallel the 1939 film The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which, in turn, was based on L. Frank Baum’s classic story about Dorothy and her canine companion, Toto.
Wicked tells the tale of two student witches, who set out as friends but, through various adventures and circumstances, end up on opposing poles as Glinda, The Good, and The Wicked Witch of the West. The tale also has a moralistic aspect, making a point about the consequences of being cast as an outsider in society.
In effect, it is a prequel to the Wizard of Oz story we all know and love, told with dazzling effects, a soaring score and wonderful wit. From the outset, the show charms audiences, providing true escapism and inspiration. Critical acclaim suggests that Wicked, with its hit songs like Defying Gravity and I’m not that Girl, is likely to become one of the most epic, memorable and greatest musicals of all time.
