The legendary British rock group, Queen, fronted by Freddy Mercury until his death in 1991, lend its brilliant talent to this bright, bold musical show written by British comedian Ben Elton, in consultation with group members Brian May and Roger Taylor. The ‘jukebox musical’ show is based on the songs of the group, and titled after Queen’s iconic hit single of the same name.
The imaginative storyline of We will Rock You takes place in a fanciful future in which an Orwellian Earth has become fully globalised; individualism is denied and musical instruments unknown. The inevitable lone rebel, named Galileo, refuses to conform and comes to the fore, setting out to re-invent rock and roll music to bring the planet back to reality.
The story is entertaining, but reliant on Queen’s musical hits, which are worked into the tapestry of the action. The show has proven a hit even beyond London, with international productions selling out from Australia to Bangkok, and South Africa to Singapore. We will Rock You features 32 of Queen’s greatest hits, including Bohemian Rhapsody, I Want to Break Free and Radio Gaga. The London production has won numerous awards, and a sequel is currently being planned.
