It’s all in the rhythm – a universal language that crosses all borders whether cultural, colourful, ethnic or religious. We can all stamp our feet to the beat, and that is what this amazing show is all about. For more than eight years Stomp has stayed fresh, new and innovative with new routines and choreography – many in the audience are regulars that have become addicted. So what’s it all about?
Making music, but not in the traditional sense. It is a group of eight people who grab anything and everything to set up a hypnotic beat, whether it is plastic bags, dustbins, mops or even a few kitchen sinks. It all began in Brighton in the UK in the summer of 1981, when former street band members Steve Mc Nicholas and Luke Cresswell got together to create a dustbin dance, ultimately being recognised at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and earning a place in the West End.
The Stomp phenomenon has taken off around the world, with several companies putting together their own versions, but the West End production with its percussive stars remains the mentor. Stomp is all about beautiful noise and movement, with a hint of comedy – no words required.
