Considered to be one of the greatest musicals ever written, South Pacific tells the story of naive American nurse Nellie Forbush, stationed at a US Naval base in the South Pacific region during World War II. This famed production originated on the Broadway stage, and is largely based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Tales of the South Pacific, written by James A. Michener in 1947.
The story centres on Nellie and her relationship with French plantation owner Emile de Becque, exploring several sensitive issues including racial prejudice and inter-racial marriage. Unbeknown to Nellie, Emile is the father of two mixed-race children with a native Polynesian woman. When this is revealed, Arkansas-born Nellie struggles in a battle between her deep-seated racial prejudices and her love for Emile. This theme of racial bigotry is mimicked by other central characters, and the issue is tackled candidly.
With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics penned by Oscar Hammerstein II, this international hit features tunes like ‘Bali Ha’I’, ‘Happy Talk’ and ‘I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair’. A critical and box office hit, South Pacific has enjoyed success all over the world, and will continue to do so for years to come.
