Roald Dahl’s classic story of Matilda colourfully comes to life in this musical stage adaptation by the Royal Shakespeare Company, written by Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Australian comedian and composer Tim Minchin. Directed by Matthew Warchus, Matilda weaves a tale of bravery and magic revolving around young Matilda, a child with incredible intelligence and extraordinary powers. Ignored and unloved by her parents, Matilda must take her education into her own hands, and impresses her schoolteacher with her remarkable abilities. Conflict comes in the form of her tyrannical headmistress, the repressive Miss Trunchbull, and soon Matilda is fighting to end this bully’s oppressive reign, for her sake and the sake of her friends. With production design by Rob Howell, choreography by Peter Darling and musical supervision and orchestration by Christopher Nightingale, this captivating production is a glorious mix of adventures and amazing acts, and has been hailed as ‘the best British musical since Billy Elliot’ by The Daily Telegraph. Matilda: The Musical will transfer to the West End’s Cambridge Theatre in October 2011, having already enjoyed a successful run at Stratford-upon-Avon’s Courtyard Theatre in 2010, during which the show received the Critics’ Circle Theatre Award for Best Musical.
