One of the most thrilling and popular blockbuster musicals in London, Chicago is set in the city of the same name during the Prohibition era and tells the tale of a nightclub dancer, Roxy Hart, who is sent to prison after she murders her lover. There she meets a cell-block full of criminal women, amongst them the celebrity murderess, Velma Kelly, who killed her sister and husband when she caught them together in bed.
The two women vie for the biggest share of the limelight and the attentions of Velma’s smooth talking lawyer, Billy Flynn. Chicago the musical is a satire on the dishonesty in the criminal justice system and the ‘celebrity criminal’ concept, and was adapted from a 1926 production written by journalist Maurine Dallas Watkins, based on actual crimes and criminals that she investigated during the 1920s.
John Kander wrote the music for Chicago, with lyrics by Fred Ebb, and just of few of the hit songs in this show are All That Jazz, Funny Honey, Cell Block Tango and All I Need Is Love. Whether you love music or drama, you’ll find loads of both in this well-loved and long running production, and missing it would be a crime.
